Proof of onward travel for Costa Rica: the exit-ticket rule

Costa Rica asks visitors to prove they will leave: a ticket out of the country within the stay they are granted. Airlines flying into San José and Liberia check it, and so do immigration officers.

The Costa Rica exit-ticket rule

Costa Rica is one of the strictest countries in the Americas about onward travel. Tourists entering without a visa are expected to show proof of exit - a ticket leaving Costa Rica - dated within the stay they are granted on arrival. The length of stay is decided by the officer and stamped in your passport, so plan your onward date conservatively.

Airlines are the first gate. Carriers flying into San José (SJO) and Liberia (LIR) routinely ask passengers on one-way tickets for their exit ticket before issuing a boarding pass.

What counts

  • A confirmed flight leaving Costa Rica, in your name, with a date inside your permitted stay.
  • At land borders (Nicaragua, Panama), bus tickets out are sometimes accepted - but for air arrivals, a flight is what airlines expect.

Panama City (PTY) is the obvious choice - a short, frequent flight from both SJO and LIR. Bogotá and Mexico City are also realistic options.

Before you fly

  1. Check entry requirements for your nationality with Costa Rica's immigration authority.
  2. Carry your onward reservation PDF and booking reference.
  3. Expect officers to ask how long you plan to stay - your answer should match your onward date.

How long will they give you?

Costa Rica can grant many visa-exempt nationalities a stay of up to 180 days, but the number of days is decided by the officer and written in your passport - it is not automatic. Officers commonly look at your exit ticket and give you a stay that covers it. If you plan a longer trip, choose an onward date that reflects it rather than the shortest possible hop.

Proof of funds

Besides the exit ticket, officers can ask for evidence that you can support yourself during your stay. A bank card and a recent statement are usually enough; carry them in your hand luggage.

Arriving by land

Crossing from Nicaragua at Peñas Blancas or from Panama at Paso Canoas, officers can still ask for a ticket out of Costa Rica. Bus companies at the border sometimes sell exit tickets on the spot for exactly this reason - another sign of how seriously the rule is taken.

Frequently asked questions

Will the airline let me board to Costa Rica without an exit ticket?

Often not. Airlines flying to Costa Rica commonly ask for proof of exit at check-in, and can refuse boarding without it.

Can I show a bus ticket to Panama?

It is sometimes accepted at land borders, but airline staff checking a flight into Costa Rica usually expect a flight out.

How many days will Costa Rica give me?

Many nationalities can be granted up to 180 days, but the officer decides and stamps the number in your passport. A clear exit date helps them choose a stay that covers your trip.
