Kuala Lumpur (KUL) - huge onward choice

Do you need an onward ticket for Malaysia?

Malaysia lets many nationalities in without a visa for a set period. Immigration officers can ask for evidence that you'll leave within that time - a return or onward ticket - and airlines flying one-way passengers into Kuala Lumpur sometimes ask at check-in. It's checked less often than in the Philippines or New Zealand, but it does happen.

The MDAC

Visitors must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online in the days before arrival. It's free on the official immigration site.

What to show

A confirmed flight leaving Malaysia inside your permitted stay. Traveling on to Singapore by bus is common, but if you are asked at check-in, a flight reservation is the proof agents recognize.

Kuala Lumpur is one of Asia's busiest low-cost hubs: Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh City are all short, frequent flights. From Penang, Singapore and Bangkok.

Sabah and Sarawak

East Malaysia (Borneo) runs its own immigration controls, so you may be stamped again when flying between Peninsular and East Malaysia. Your international onward booking still needs to leave Malaysia within your permitted stay.

How long you can stay

Visa-free periods in Malaysia depend on nationality - commonly 30 or 90 days. The officer decides on arrival, so check the current rule for your passport on the Immigration Department of Malaysia website and choose an onward date comfortably inside it.

Border runs and repeat entries

Travelers who leave for Singapore or Thailand and come straight back are sometimes questioned more closely on re-entry. If you are re-entering, have an onward booking that clearly leaves Malaysia again within your new permitted stay, plus an idea of where you are staying.

Submitting the MDAC

The MDAC is submitted within the few days before your arrival and asks for your flight details and address in Malaysia. Use your inbound flight for the arrival information - your onward reservation is what you carry in case you are asked how you will leave.

Choose a route, then add your date and passenger names.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MDAC required?

Yes, for most visitors - it is completed online before arrival on the official immigration site.

Does a bus to Singapore count as onward travel?

An officer may accept it, but if an airline asks at check-in they usually expect a flight out of Malaysia.

How long can I stay in Malaysia without a visa?

It depends on your passport - commonly 30 or 90 days. The officer sets the period on arrival; check the current rule for your nationality before choosing your onward date.
