The New Zealand onward-travel rule

Visitors to New Zealand must hold an onward ticket to a country they have the right to enter - a return home, or a flight to a country where they're allowed in. It's strictly applied: airlines flying to Auckland (AKL), Christchurch (CHC) and Wellington (WLG) check it before boarding.

The detail most people miss

The onward country matters. A flight to Australia only works as proof if you can enter Australia (for example with a valid ETA or visa). If you're unsure, a flight to your home country, or to a country your passport can enter without a visa, is the safe choice.

NZeTA

Travelers from visa-waiver countries need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travel, applied for online or through the official app. It usually includes an international visitor levy.

Auckland to Sydney, Brisbane or Nadi (Fiji); Christchurch to Sydney.

Before you fly

  1. Get your NZeTA or visa through official channels only.
  2. Choose an onward destination you can actually enter.
  3. Keep your reservation PDF and booking reference ready at check-in.

How long you can stay

Visa-waiver visitors are usually granted up to three months, and British citizens up to six. Your onward ticket should leave inside that period. Immigration New Zealand can also ask for evidence of funds and of your accommodation.

Working holiday visas

Working holiday visa holders are not visitors. Depending on your scheme, you may need to show an outward ticket or enough money to buy one - check the conditions of your specific visa on the Immigration New Zealand site.

Why airlines are so strict

New Zealand runs advance passenger processing: airlines send your details before departure and receive a board or no-board response. Check-in agents also see the entry requirements for your passport, including onward travel, which is why the question is asked so consistently on flights to Auckland.

Frequently asked questions

Can my onward ticket be to Australia?

Only if you can enter Australia - for example with a valid ETA or visa. Otherwise choose a destination your passport can enter.

Is the NZeTA the same as a visa?

No - it is an electronic travel authority for visa-waiver nationalities. You still need to meet entry requirements, including onward travel.

I have a working holiday visa. Do I need an onward ticket?

The rule for visitors does not apply to you in the same way, but some working holiday schemes require an outward ticket or the funds to buy one. Check the conditions of your visa.
