Onward ticket for Vietnam: e-visa, visa exemption and what airlines ask

Vietnam’s rules hinge on your visa. Visa-exempt visitors and e-visa holders are not always asked for onward travel, but airlines can ask one-way passengers to show when they are leaving.

Is an onward ticket required for Vietnam?

Vietnam does not apply a single onward-ticket rule to everyone. What matters is how you enter:

  • Visa-exempt nationalities may stay for a set number of days. Staying within that period - and being able to show when you leave - is your responsibility.
  • E-visa holders apply online in advance; the application asks for your intended entry and exit, and the visa is valid for a fixed period.

Immigration officers rarely ask for proof on arrival, but airlines carrying a one-way passenger into Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Hanoi (HAN) or Da Nang (DAD) may want to see that you'll leave before your permitted stay ends - particularly visa-exempt travelers.

What to show

A confirmed flight leaving Vietnam within your visa-exempt period or e-visa validity is the clearest proof. Domestic flights (Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City) don't count.

Before you fly

  1. Check whether your nationality is visa-exempt and for how long, or apply for the e-visa on the official immigration portal only.
  2. Make sure your onward date is inside that period.
  3. Keep the reservation PDF offline - airport Wi-Fi is not something to rely on.

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore; Da Nang to Singapore and Bangkok.

Visa exemption or e-visa: which applies to you?

Vietnam's exemption list covers a number of mostly European and East Asian passports for a fixed number of days, and the list and lengths have changed more than once in recent years. Everyone else - and anyone staying longer than their exemption - uses the e-visa, which can be issued for up to 90 days with single or multiple entry. If you are visa-exempt but staying longer than your exemption allows, apply for the e-visa instead of relying on an extension.

Matching your dates

Your onward date should fall inside whichever period applies: the exemption length counted from your arrival, or the validity printed on your e-visa. Overstaying in Vietnam is fined per day and can delay your departure, so build in a margin rather than booking the last possible day.

Traveling on overland

Many travelers leave Vietnam by bus to Cambodia or Laos. That's perfectly legal, but a check-in agent abroad looking at a one-way flight to Hanoi will usually only recognize a flight booking as proof that you're leaving.

Frequently asked questions

Does Vietnam check onward tickets on arrival?

Rarely at immigration. The more likely check is at airline check-in before you fly, especially on a one-way ticket.

Which website should I use for the e-visa?

Only the official Vietnam Immigration Department portal. Many lookalike sites charge high fees.

My e-visa is valid for 90 days but I only plan to stay three weeks. Which date should I show?

Any date inside the e-visa validity works. A date that reflects your real plan makes for an easier conversation if an officer asks how long you are staying.
